A drawing of a youn Raggiana Bird of PAradise flat skin. There are no bones in the specimen I used, so the feathers are a bit out of wack. I did this to study the way the feather shapes change up and down the wing. The head is of a Red Bird of Paradise round skin. Location: San Diego Natural History Mueseum. Thank you Mr. Phil Unitt!

I contacted the curators of a couple of museums, and they are very accomodating to an artist. They will either let you browse the collection at your leisure, or bring out whatever specimens you ask for. So far I have visited the San Diego Natural History Museum and the L.A. Natural History Museum. If you are near a NHM, try contacting them!

Awesome! :) I'll have to arrange a trip to the LA one sometime. One of the neatest specimens I saw was behind the scenes at the Oakland museum (it's a small place, but if you're in the bay area check them out- really well-mounted specimens)- a pair of passenger pigeons. I never knew how gorgeous these birds were, it was a poignant moment. =\

dang I move out of that airea before I ever knew anything about the available refrences.. I'm going to have to get there somehow.
